de*nada

A quick interview with Virginia from de*nada accessories, a fantastic new line of women and mens accessories!

1. Tell me more about your brand, de*nada accessories. Why did you choose
accessories?

de*nada is an emerging accessories line, specializing in handmade knits
for women and men. The word itself commonly means, “you’re welcome” in
Spanish.

Although de*nada currently focuses on accessories, I do plan to expand and
create a cut and sew line in the near future. When I created de*nada, it
happened naturally that I started off designing handbags and t-shirts,
which later led to designing knit accessories. Since I studied fiber art
in college, the design process for knits came to me a lot more organically
than designing handbags for example. This year, I’m focusing entirely on
knit accessories and just launched my new collection for autumn/winter
2009.

2. What influenced or encouraged you to start your own brand?

In college, I focused almost exclusively on fiber art. And when I
graduated, I thought I wanted to work as an artist. However, one day my
focus changed and I wanted to try something new.

At that time, I felt like I was at a crossroads with two options to choose
from. Choose the norm and look for a 9 to 5 job or take a chance and start
my own business. It happens that I’ve never been great at working for
another person, so I opted towards starting my own business.

3. Any designers/models/celebrities you'd like to collaborate with and why?

To be honest, I haven’t really thought about whom I’d like to collaborate
with. I guess if I had to choose a celebrity, I would love to work with
Natalie Portman. Not only is she absolutely gorgeous and is brilliant at
her craft, but I love her style … very sophisticated and feminine.

4. What do you love most about designing?

What I love most about designing is being able to express my point of view
into a body of work. I’ve never been good at expressing my ideas through
writing or speaking. But when it comes to art and design, I feel very
comfortable. It’s my time to pull all my inspirations and ideas together
and somehow translate them visually into a cohesive collection.

5. What type of person do you see wearing your designs?

Since I am always trying to reinvent new ways on how different accessories
can be worn, I picture my designs on an individual looking for accent
pieces that are innovative and stylish, yet also classic and
sophisticated.

6. Lastly, any advice for young designers wanting to choose fashion design
as a career?

One advice I would offer to any young designer wanting to choose fashion
design as a career is always remind yourself why you love what you do.
There’s always going to be good and bad moments in any career you choose.
However as long as you have the passion to do what you love to do, you can
persevere through any tough moments.
